Fluffy French Bulldog or Standard? The Honest Long-Hair Guide
Long-haired French Bulldog (Fluffy) vs standard: genetics, rarity, price, grooming. How to spot a real Fluffy Frenchie in Switzerland.
Fluffy French Bulldog or standard? Over the past few years, one variant of the French Bulldog has been literally driving families crazy in Switzerland, in Europe and around the world: the so-called Fluffy Frenchie — the long-haired French Bulldog. A small genetic revolution that deserves an honest guide, with no marketing and no fairy tales.
What a Fluffy Frenchie really is
The Fluffy is not a new breed. It is a French Bulldog in every respect, with longer, softer and slightly wavy hair — especially around the ears, the neck, the chest and the rear. The body, character, structure and temperament: all French Bulldog. The long coat changes the look, not the identity of the breed.
The genetic differences
Long hair is driven by the L gene (Long Hair, also known as FGF5). It is recessive: to be born Fluffy, a puppy must inherit two copies of the gene — one from the father, one from the mother. Both parents must therefore be carriers. That is why Fluffy puppies are rare, expensive and require serious genetic selection — not improvisation.
How rare a Fluffy actually is
From a litter of two carriers, on average only about 25% of the puppies are born Fluffy. In plain words: in many litters there is no Fluffy at all. That is why genuine long-haired French Bulldogs from tested lines are priced higher than the standard variant: in Switzerland we are talking CHF 5,000–10,000 for a serious Fluffy puppy, versus CHF 3,500–6,000 for a quality standard French Bulldog.
Looks: what visibly changes
The standard French Bulldog has short, smooth, shiny hair. The Fluffy has visible feathering on the ears, a more present undercoat and an overall softer, less "sculpted" look. Many families describe it as a "plush" version of the French Bulldog. As puppies the difference is striking; as adults the coat settles at around 2 to 5 cm in length on the characteristic areas.
Grooming: what you really need
The standard French Bulldog needs little more than a weekly brushing. The Fluffy needs a bit more: brushing 2–3 times a week to prevent tangles on the longer areas, attention to the ears (where hair mats easily) and a bath every 4–6 weeks. No mandatory professional grooming like with a Maltipoo or a Poodle — but a consistent home routine, yes.
Health: identical to the standard French Bulldog
The Fluffy is neither more fragile nor more robust than the standard French Bulldog. It inherits the same attention points typical of a brachycephalic breed: breathing, skin folds, spine, joints, thermal regulation. That is exactly why parent selection — BOAS test, spine X-rays, knee checks — matters even more for an in-demand and high-value variant like the Fluffy.
Temperament: same dog, same heart
Affectionate, home-loving, attached to the family, a serious napper, generally lazy and surprisingly funny. The Fluffy is not a different dog in character: it is a French Bulldog wearing, quite simply, a longer coat. It gets on with children, seniors, other dogs and apartment living, just like its short-coated brother.
Watch out for marketing: not every "Fluffy" is a Fluffy
More and more ads are popping up online for "Fluffy Frenchie at CHF 2,500". Be cautious. A real Fluffy requires both parents tested for the L gene, genetic confirmation on the puppy, full veterinary documentation and a breeder who can explain the genetics with no hesitation. Anything else is marketing, half-truth or a standard French Bulldog with slightly longer hair.
Fluffy or standard: which to choose
If you are looking for a French Bulldog and the "plush" look truly moves you, the Fluffy is an extraordinary variant — provided you are willing to invest more, to wait (waiting lists are long) and to take care of a more demanding coat. If instead you want the classic, smooth-coated French Bulldog, the short hair stays perfect: same character, same heart, more accessible price.
