Training

Basic training: the first commands (and why shouting 'NOOOO!' is not a training method)

Why a puppy is not born trained but ready to learn: trust, positive reinforcement, recall and the real difference between controlling and guiding.

There is a very common belief when a puppy arrives home.

That he will magically: understand everything right away, already know how to behave, know his name, tell carpet from bathroom, and above all perfectly understand screams in Italian, German or Swiss dialect after 48 hours.

Spoiler: it doesn't work that way.

A puppy is not born trained. He is born ready to learn. And that is a huge difference.

The good news? Puppies learn MUCH faster than humans.

Especially in the first months. The problem is that families often imagine training as: military drill, rigidity, imposition, 'must obey immediately'.

When instead a puppy learns better through: trust, repetition, play, motivation, serenity, consistency.

Not through fear or pressure. Because a fearful dog may also freeze... but he is not really learning.

The first commands: few, simple and fundamental

At the start you only need solid basics. The most important:

  • Sit
  • Down
  • Stay
  • Come

That's it. There is no need to turn a Toy Poodle into a special federal agent by the first weekend.

What really matters is building: communication, attention, relationship, mutual trust.

Short sessions. Always.

One of the most common mistakes? Endless sessions. The puppy after 3 minutes, 4 treats, 2 distractions and a leaf flying out the window has already mentally left the meeting.

Learning works better with:

  • 3-5 minute sessions
  • several times a day
  • calm environment
  • positive tone
  • immediate rewards

Small win = immediate reward. Always.

Positive reinforcement works because the dog is NOT stupid

Many people think: 'well, this way you spoil him'. No.

This way the puppy connects: correct behaviour, positive experience, motivation.

And that is exactly how they learn best.

Rewards: treats, positive voice, petting, play, enthusiasm.

Work infinitely better than: shouting, punishment, tugging, anger.

Because fear breaks trust. And without trust there is no real training.

Recall: the command that can really save a life

Among all commands, the most important is not 'sit'. It is 'come'.

Recall is safety. It is the command that: avoids dangers, prevents running away, protects the dog, allows controlled freedom.

And this is where many people go wrong. Because they start straight away: at the park, with distractions everywhere, no foundations, demanding immediate perfection.

Then the puppy sees a leaf, a dog, a pigeon... and emotionally disappears from the universe.

How to REALLY teach recall

Gradually.

  • First indoors
  • Then in a calm environment
  • Then in the garden
  • Then in fenced areas
  • Only AFTER in open areas

And above all: recall must be positive. NOT: 'COME HERE SO I CAN SCOLD YOU!'

Because the puppy connects: 'coming back = problem'. And he will stop wanting to come back.

Consistency matters more than perfection

A puppy doesn't need: a perfect family, military trainers, impossible rules.

He needs: calm, consistency, patience, routine, stable energy.

Because training a puppy does not mean 'controlling him'. It means teaching him to live well in the human world.

And when the relationship is built correctly... many commands become almost natural. Because the dog starts to truly trust you.
