What to check in a puppy's European passport

Identification number, microchip, vaccinations, vet details: what must be there, what must not.

Official EU cover page with ISO country code + passport number.
Ideally only one previous owner should appear: the breeder or seller.
The breed must be clearly stated — not 'similar breed' or 'mixed'.
15-digit microchip number with matching sticker label.
Official / state veterinarian issuing the passport — ideally the same throughout the passport.
Rabies vaccination sticker with the 3 matching dates: vaccination, valid from, valid until.
3–4 documented core puppy vaccinations, depending on age and schedule. Ideally signed by the same vet.

The European pet passport is one of the most important documents when purchasing a puppy. It shows the dog's identity and breed, vaccinations, microchip, owner details, and veterinary annotations.

Important points to check:

  • The passport must have an identification number.
  • Data must be entered cleanly, completely, and understandably.
  • Erasures, corrections, overtakes, or subsequent modifications are not permitted by European regulations and indicate possible tampering.
  • Microchip number, date of birth, breed description, color, and vaccinations must match.
  • Vaccinations must be documented with the veterinarian's stamp, date, and signature.
  • De-worming treatments, external parasite treatments, and, if required for transport or delivery, the official veterinarian's or competent veterinarian's visit within 72 hours before the purchase or transport of the dog must also be present.
  • The number of previous owners must be checked.
